The problem
Two 100% New Zealand wool rugs from a Midtown Manhattan home — a navy 6×9 flat-weave and an ivory 8×10 hand-knotted shag. Both had built-up general soiling from daily use in a home with a dog, and the light tones showed every bit of it. Wool needs gentle, pH-appropriate handling, so each rug was assessed for colorfastness and fiber condition first — the maker's own care label even recommends professional cleaning.
What we did
Both rugs were picked up and cleaned off-site at the shop rather than surface-cleaned in place — the right call for wool rugs with all-over soiling, since they can be washed through properly and dried flat under controlled conditions. Each rug was handled on its own, gentle enough for wool and its dyes, then returned once fully dry.
The result
Both rugs came back noticeably brighter — the ivory shag lifted back toward its original light tone, and the navy flat-weave's colors and pattern read clearly again once the soiling was washed out. With well-used wool some wear stays, and that's flagged honestly, but the difference across both rugs was clear.
