The problem

The owner had already paid another company to clean this sectional — twice. The photos marked before are the state it was in after their second visit. They refunded the money and left, and by the time the call reached us the question was no longer whether it could be cleaned but whether it was ruined.

What was actually on the piece: general soiling built up over time, traces left by attempts to clean it at home, a few marks from children that looked like marker, and several older washed-out stains whose shape and edges read as pet urine. On top of that, the previous visits had left banding across the back and the curve — alternating lighter and darker strips where the fabric had been worked unevenly. That kind of striping is not soil. It is what a wrong approach leaves behind, and on a pale wool it is more visible than the dirt it was meant to remove.

The sectional carried no care label at all — nothing sewn in — and the owner could not say what the fabric was. That had to be settled before anything touched it, so the fibre was tested on site and came back wool. On a curved Italian bouclé at this price, that is not something to guess at. Missing labels are common: labelling upholstery is voluntary in the United States.

What we did

The work covered the whole sectional rather than only the marked areas — both sections, the curved back, the seats and the rolled edges — because the banding ran across panels and an even result is only possible when the entire surface is brought to the same state.

The result

The sectional came back to an even cream across both sections. The banding is gone, the patching in the seats and along the curve is gone, and the piece reads as one uniform colour again. After two attempts and a refund, neither the owner nor the assistant who had sourced both companies expected that outcome.

What did not come out: the older urine-type stains did not lift completely. On wool they rarely do — the fibre holds that kind of staining in a way synthetics do not. In photographs they are effectively invisible; in the room they can still be caught at a certain angle, in certain light. That was said before the job began, not afterwards. Why pet urine behaves this way on upholstery.

No care label meant the fibre had to be identified before any method was chosen — more on cleaning codes and sofas that have no label at all. The cleaning was $360. Couch and sectional cleaning in Manhattan.
